Academics

Igniting Creativity
At The Waterford Ridge School, we serve bright, curious learners who thrive with challenge, sustained inquiry, and thoughtful guidance. Our Elementary academic program for K-Grade 2 is intentionally designed for children who demonstrate strong curiosity, emerging independence, and a readiness to engage deeply with ideas.

Our Curriculum
Waterford Ridge School is grounded in research-based gifted education, emphasizing advanced reasoning, creativity, and student agency. We believe children learn best when they are meaningfully challenged and given ownership of their work.
Our program blends the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) with a Montessori-informed approach, combining hands-on learning, independence, and extended work cycles with advanced academics, inquiry, art, and STEM. Instruction is individualized, allowing students to progress based on readiness, often at an accelerated pace.
Classrooms are calm and intellectually focused, with ongoing, observation-based assessment guiding instruction. Students develop strong academic foundations, higher-order thinking skills, and a genuine engagement with learning.
Curriculum Overview
Reading, Writing & Language Arts
Strong literacy is essential for advanced learning. Our language arts program combines explicit instruction with rich discussion and analytical thinking.
We draw from:
-
Montessori language materials
-
The Rhythm of Handwriting for cursive & manuscript handwriting support
-
Wordly Wise and Latin/Greek Root Lessons for vocabulary
-
Logic of English for systematic phonics, spelling, and encoding
-
Junior Great Books for literature discussion and reasoning
-
Selected units from William & Mary Language Arts (Grades 1–2)
Students develop confident reading skills, strong comprehension, expressive writing, and the ability to discuss ideas thoughtfully and clearly.
Mathematics
Mathematics at The Waterford Ridge School emphasizes deep understanding over speed. Students practice daily for fluency, explore concepts hands-on, and engage in challenging problems that require reasoning and multiple solution paths.
We draw from:
-
Montessori mathematics materials
-
Singapore Math (Primary Mathematics / Math in Focus) for conceptual progression and structured practice
-
Investigations in Number, Data, and Space for rich, concept-driven problem solving
-
Advanced challenge tasks from NRICH Mathematics
-
Teaching practices informed by Building Thinking Classrooms
Math learning is discussion-based, rigorous, and screen-free.
Science
Science at Waterford Ridge School is grounded in hands-on investigation, observation, and evidence-based reasoning. We use the FOSS (Full Option Science System) curriculum to support inquiry, experimentation, and conceptual understanding.
Students engage in multi-week investigations—asking questions, designing experiments, collecting data, and revising their thinking. We also draw from Montessori science and Engineering is Elementary to deepen exploration through nature study and design challenges.
This approach builds curiosity, scientific reasoning, and the ability to think critically through testing and revision.
Engineering & Design
Engineering at Waterford Ridge School is embedded within our science program and extends FOSS investigations through applied design challenges. Students are regularly invited to plan, build, test, and improve solutions to real-world problems connected to their science studies.
Experiences include:
-
Engineering challenges aligned to FOSS concepts
-
Building, testing, and redesigning models and systems
-
Introduction to engineering principles such as stability, structure, force, and function
-
Collaborative problem solving and iteration
This approach allows gifted learners to move beyond content knowledge and into applied reasoning and innovation.
STEM & Robotics Lab
Robotics and applied STEM experiences complement—but do not replace—our core science curriculum. These labs provide opportunities for students to apply scientific and mathematical thinking in new contexts.
Offerings may include:
-
Robotics and coding foundations
-
Maker-based STEM projects
-
Technology as a tool for design and problem solving, not passive consumption
-
Enrichment Robotics and Coding Specialists
Geography & Field Lab
Geography is taught as a spatial and cultural discipline, helping students understand place, direction, and human systems through direct observation and hands-on exploration.
Focus areas include:
-
Mapping, landforms, and spatial reasoning
-
Human geography and settlement patterns
-
Local field studies and place-based learning
-
Hands-on materials and real-world navigation skills
.
Creative & Performing Arts
The arts are integrated into academic study and project work, supporting creativity, expression, and disciplined practice.
Offerings include:
-
Visual arts connected to science, history, and literature
-
Suzuki-inspired music instruction, emphasizing auditory learning, memory, sequencing, and focus through small group violin lessons
-
Movement and performance as part of project-based learning
Physical Development & Mindfulness
Physical development is approached as foundational to learning, confidence, and self-regulation. Students participate in daily movement and outdoor exploration that supports coordination, endurance, and focus.
Activities may include hiking, structured rotating sports, and discipline-based programs such as martial arts and dance.
Language & Culture
Students are introduced to world languages and cultures through consistent, developmentally appropriate exposure that emphasizes sound, pattern, and communication.
-
Offerings include:
-
A Mandarin Language Lessons
-
Oral language development through songs, movement, and conversation
-
Cultural studies integrated with geography and humanities
Language learning is positioned as cognitive enrichment and cultural literacy rather than early fluency, supporting listening skills, memory, and pattern recognition.
Logic, Strategy & Games
This strand explicitly supports executive function and higher-order thinking. Students engage in structured activities that develop planning, foresight, and self-regulation.
Experiences include:
-
Chess instruction and guided play
-
Logic puzzles and reasoning challenges
-
Strategy games that encourage persistence and thoughtful decision-making
Independent Inquiry & Guided Choice
Waterford Ridge School incorporates daily guided choice to support independence, self-regulation, and depth of learning. Students may read, write, create, or extend academic work within a calm, purposeful environment.
Faculty provide guidance to ensure choices remain meaningful, supporting both intellectual growth and focused engagement.
